I have always wanted to break a 5:00 mile.  I ran a 5:03 1600m in high school and figured that would be as close as I got.  Today I got one step closer to that goal.  I set out to run a sub 5:00 1600m today on a track.  I met up with Paul and James this morning at the USU track and did a nice warmup.  The plan was to have Paul pace laps 1 and 3 and have James help throughout.  I have to say that I tried hard and ran well, but fell short...barely.  I ran 5:00 exactly!

Splits: Lap 1 - 74.5

Lap 2 - 76.5 (2:31 800m)

Lap 3 - 76.2

Lap 4 - 72.8 (2:29 800m 5:00 total)

Max HR 188 (Should be pretty close to my actual max HR)

I felt like I gave it my all and am pleased that I set a new PR (9 years later).  James thinks I should have tried for 4:50 so that even if I fell short of 4:50 I would've made sub 5.  I think he is probably right.  Maybe next time...

Nice work, I've been real curious where I'm at in regards to an all out mile. I was decent in high school, but my most recent attempt in an all out mile was a few years ago, when I was coaching in Colorado and I wasn't in very good shape 5:12. I think similiar to you I could hit something close to or under 5, maybe I'll hit the track sometime soon and give it a try. I got my entry changed to the half in Ogden instead of the full. I think it will be a good race for me. I ran 1:19:55 last week in the Hurricane Half, which is not a real fast course and we were dealing with a strong headwind. Hopefully in Ogden I can hit something around 1:16 or 1:17.

Congrats, Cody! It's only a matter of time when you break 5:00. You're still improving by significant margins in all distances, so I don't doubt your ability to break 5:00. Maybe find some open track meets in your area with good competition.

Contrary to a popular myth, a father of two in his late 20s is more than capable of breaking his high school mile times. He only needs the discipline to train and the guts to try. Your splits show that you have excellent aerobic base. I think James is right - you have at least a 4:50 in you. You have been training just for the marathon with no mile specific training. If you spend a month in a severe anaerobic zone and get used to the pain of a good mile, you should be able to run 4:50 no problem. How did you feel on the second and third lap, and how did you feel for the first 10 minutes after you finished?

Nice job today! If you want to try it again next week or whenever I promise I will be a better pacer. Don't worry, you can run sub 5:00, even with zero speed work and all marathon training. That is what you shoud be proud of, a 5:00 mile with all marathon training!

I agree with Sasha and James. With some specific speed training, I could drop that time still.

Sasha, I actually felt ok during the 2nd and 3rd laps. My legs got really heavy and sluggish, but I think I still ran strong during the "hardest laps". I felt pretty tired after finishing, but AFTER 10 minutes, I was feeling pretty good.
