8 miles on the Jordan River Parkway.  It had just snowed a couple of wet inches on the trail and it was pretty slick.  As long as I stayed away from the footprints already there, I could get traction. 7 min pace was also about the limit to how fast I could go without slipping on the pushoff.  So thats what it was.  I ran into Brent on the trail and tried to recruit him for some extra miles, but he was already done.  Next time.  It should be a while until we are down to SLC again. The run went well, but I still feel out of shape and that I am working too hard for the pace.   I will get where I want to be soon though.  Still just building back up.

I am in the process of researching Health Savings accounts (HSA's)  Does anyone currently use one?  Anyone with experience with it?  It seems like a great deal, if you don't spend too much time at the doctors.  My current insurance through work costs an arm and a leg for the premium so if I could find better options, I am all ears...

HSA's are really really good if everyone in your family is healthy. If anyone has health problems, you'll be spending a lot of the deductibles, and it's not a good value. We don't have one right now because my boss pays 100% for our health insurance, but if I didn't have that deal, or were self-employed, I would definitely get an HSA.

In general, I like them because it puts health care back into the hands of the consumer and brings some awareness and accountability to the rip-offs out there (ie - $40 heat packs and $100 pens charged to insurance). If the consumer knows how much they are paying for every line item, less of that garbage would go on. Instead, the insurance companies pay it all, and subsequently raise everyone's rates. Also, I like the tax breaks and opportunity to invest the account with HSA's. They are heavily recommended by Dave Ramsey, if that makes any difference to you.

Cody, next time coming to Salt Lake, drop me a blog, we can hook up for some miles. I will wear my fast, La Femme shoes.

See you at Striders, if not before on the trail.

Did you and Jon get all registered for Striders?

I used an HSA in 2007 and am again this year. It's funny because my premiums at work are a lot cheaper for HSA vs. not, making the high deductable/HSA cheaper even if you have high medical bills. I have a spreadsheet if you want where you can fill in the premiums/deductables/etc from your med choices and see which is cheapest.

I spent 3+ hours doing the math on it last night. I would love to see the spreadsheet. Can you e-mail it to me? According to my math, as long as I dont have any major problems, I can save significant $ every year. And then, even if the worst case scenario (it would take a $30K bil to hit this scenario) occurs, I would only be about 2-3K worse off then if I stayed with my current insurance. I am also interested in common prices for common charges. What does a doctor charge to X-ray, perscribe antibiotics, etc. Any info on that would be great too.

Double check with your the health insurer, I do not believe maternity is covered at all. Under a traditional plan maternity is covered after a $5000 deductible. If you are planning more children, it would be good to check out.
