Wheat and Beet 10K in Garland UT

Jon, Walter, Paul and myself drove to Garland (small town north of Brigham and near Tremonton) to run a 10K. $5 entry fee (non-competitive no shirt no awards). Pretty good turnout (250 or so) for the 5K/10K. I have been feeling lousy all week due to the recovery from the relay and the jump in mileage. I had high hopes of 36 min but didn't even get close.

The race started out rough. I was side by side with some ~15 year old girl running the 5K when she turned for the corner way too soon. She didn't do it very gracefully and cut me off horribly. The problem was that she did it so abruptly that I didn't have a chance to react and clipped her leg. She went flying face first into the asphalt (at 5:30 pace). I swear I couldn't do anything about it. I stopped to make sure she was alright and when she got up I took off too to get the places back I lost. There were 2 high school guys that took off and were in the lead, but Walter, Paul and Jon were close to them. By the mile marker (5:38), I was in 6th. The 2 guys soon turned around at the 5K turn and that left the bloggers in the first 4 places. I was feeling awful by mile 2 and was losing major chunks of time to the guys. Mile 2 had a hill and I never really got going after it. (6:14). Mile 3 had a headwind and I was all alone. (6:12). I was about 18:35 at the turn and had about a 15-20 sec lead on the 5th and 6th place guys. I tried to speed up with the wind now at my back. (5:53 and 5:58) for miles 4 and 5. I was feeling awful and there wasn't anything I could do to get the legs moving any faster. Mile 6 was (5:56) with the big down and big up for the underpass. The final kick was in :57

Bottom line. I did not run well. I kind of expected that due to my list of excuses, but it is always a let down when you just can't run fast. The plan is to keep up the intensity and miles and get into shape for the Top of Utah Half in three weeks. I will use that race to evaluate my St. George Marathon goals.

Props to Jon for winning, Walter for second, and Paul a close third. Top 4 places go to the bloggers! Bonus was the breakfast was free and we got entered into the raffle for prizes. I won a free bike tune up here in Logan ($30 value). Not a bad deal for $5. Well worth it.

3.5 warmup and 3 cooldown

PM: My 'OCD' behavior kicked in today big time and I went out late in the evening for another run.  I was just not satisfied with my 12.7 miles today.   Hi, my name is Cody and I am a mileage junkie....

I ran up to first dam and back eating gnats the whole way.  It was a slow and easy pace.  Major heartburn though.  Tai food and running don't mix.

Oh, but I wasn't quite obsessed with my mileage enough to run an extra .55 to get an even 80 for the week.

If its not the race you wanted at least its a hairy workout which is money in the training bank. The mileage jumps sometimes can take away some ability to run really fast too. In the end you'll end up faster but it doesn't show in a race when you do the jump.

From Jon on Sat, Aug 02, 2008 at 12:44:29

No worries- you still did good today, although you should be nicer to female runners. Your fitness is fine, as evidenced by 3 sub-6:00 miles on the way back, especially with the hill on mile 6. Get some rest and keep plugging away at the mileage.

By the way, I hear that doing Big Workouts in the afternoon can help with race times...

Good race. I wish I could of been to see it. Just be glad your running. I have not been able to run since the relay.

From Dale on Sat, Aug 02, 2008 at 21:15:20

Between the relay and the forced injury time off I think you're race went pretty well. You're fitness is bouncing back pretty quickly so just hang on and enjoy the ride. You'll be setting PRs in no time. Quite an excellent race considering how hard it was for you. Now if we could just teach you how to hurdle...

From Andy on Sun, Aug 03, 2008 at 11:18:35

You are taking this running thing way too serious. Tripping a high school girl just to improve your place is a little overboard. You did well considering your body probably wasn't ready to race yet. Good to see the bloggers finish 1-4.

I had to resist really hard not to go out last night to get 80 miles too. Hi my name is Josse and I am a mileage junkie.

Good job on the race. They don't always turn out how you want them.

From Jon on Sun, Aug 03, 2008 at 11:54:22

You and Josse need serious help. You complain how tired/sore you are from the rapid increase in miles, then you go run more.

At least recognition is the first step towards recovery.

From Chad on Sun, Aug 03, 2008 at 14:40:58

Cody, I would say congratulations on your race, but I feel I would just be enabling your addiction. Just remember that the first step to recovery is admitting that you have a problem :)

From Walter on Mon, Aug 04, 2008 at 00:17:48

Great race Cody! You should have been wearing your wife beater shirt though! Just kiddin! Beating women in a race is meant to be running faster than them, not physically beating them to the ground! Geesh! lol Im just glad it wasnt me that cut you off. (Note to self, let cody have the good start!)

From jtshad on Mon, Aug 04, 2008 at 17:37:35

Cody and Josse, you need to call 1-800-RUN-2MUCH! :) But I don't think they can help with Cody's anger issues with women!
