Trail Run - 

Jon and I set off for an adventure today.  The mission was to run new sections (to us) of the Bear 100 course.  We started off at Leatham hollow and right away, I was hitting new terrain.  The 3 mile stretch to Richards hollow is all dirt road and super rocky, but reasonably easy.  We made it a whopping .25 mile before Jon made us go back and change shoes.  That became a problem as the nasty snow storm that we had started to outrun now engulfed us.  Bad start. 

Once we hit the singletrack at Richards Hollow, things improved.  No rocks, no storm.  Nothing like chugging up singletrack to liven the mood.  The problem (much bigger one this time) was that it didn't take long to hit the snow line.  We only made it 1.5 miles up Richards (just past the waterfall) before the snow became too deep to run in.  Oh, yeah, did I mention it had started to snow again?  Back down Richards and back to the dirt road we went (and back into the sun).  We decided to head up the road for a ways since neither of us had been up it before.  Definitely not as cool as the singletrack.  We went about 3 miles before the snow storm caught up with us and we got to turn around and run directly into a blizzard.  The flakes were so big and wet we were soaked and FREEZING!  I was very miserable running the 3-4 miles down the road until we escaped the storm.  I was very miserable!  Really, did I mention misery?  Yep. 

Once the sun came out again I warmed up nicely and actually enjoyed the final 2 miles or so back to the car.  Jon, he was tired and quiet (rare).  I wanted to get 16+ miles and saw we would be short so I took off with Jon's blessing to venture up Leatham Hollow for a tad to check out the mud.  Yep, it had lots. But no snow (didn't go high enough).  We were short on time so I turned around before long and found Jon and we made our way back to the car.  In full sunshine.  Yep, this run sure had its ups and downs..

Okay, so what's the trick to running so much vertical without killing yourself? Here I am whining about the 8700' on the next 50 I want to run and I see your Pocatello 50 has close to 14000'. I'm not sure but I think that just might kill you *before* you manage to pass out.

How do you like the Cascadia? I've been thinking about picking up a pair.

I am still working on the vertical training. It sure helps that I live 4 miles from the 9000'+ mountains.

I am pretty scared about Pocatello's climbing. It is going to be tough!

I was just checking my vertical climbing that I have done over the last 8 weeks.

Starting 8 weeks ago till now:

2200, 3700, 4450, 2250, 3100, 4150, 7200, 4550. I think I need more. Better work on it.

I LOVE the cascadias. I now own 3 pair. Not super light or super heavy, but gives plenty of protection for my fragile feet. For me, protection is king.

I figured anything designed by an ultrarunner like Scott Jurek was probably a good shoe. Thanks for the confirmation.

Guess I need to do a few summit runs up Mt. Rainier from the entrance to really get my hill training going in the right direction.

Well, after you're done tearing up the Pocatello mountains, you guys need to come out and run the White River 50. Should be a piece of cake since it's half the vertical. Plus, it's the nat'l trail 50 championship, so should have a few who's who ultra runners. Fits nicely into your schedule between Logan Peak & El Vaquero Loco.

I have been thinking about it since your first invite. Maybe. 25% likely. A bit too close to El Vaquero Loco, but not bad. How far is it from your place?

Looks like just under 70 miles (about 1hr 45min) drive from my place. Much shorter as the crow flies. I really need to drive up there a couple of times to run some of the course to get an idea of how brutal it is.

Just think of how easy the El Vaquero Loco will feel after a challenging 50 miler 2 weeks before. You really do need a race in July....that gap from May to Aug is too long. All the cool runners will be there.
