Nasty Weather = slow times but what can you do?

The goals for the race were to PR (2:38:47) and if all went well run a 2:35.

I did about as well as expected for the weather but was dissapointed that my PR effort was not worth a PR time.  There, I am done whining...

Dustin, Jon, Bill and I stayed up in Pine Valley the night before which made for a short drive to the starting line.  Thanks again Dustin!  We could hear the wind whipping all night with rain hitting the windows so we knew we were in for a treat.  I started with a garbage bag over my singlet and it kept me pretty warm.

The race started out ok, I was right on pace for the first few miles.  We had a pretty decent group that stuck together to help with the wind.  I did my best to mooch off the group and get the wind blocked for me.  It kind of helped but I got really wet from the guys in front of me for my troubles.

Mile 1: 6:03

Mile 2: 6:13 (up-hill)

Mile 3: 5:58

I was still feeling great at this point.  Not sure what to expect with the weather as it was still raining and windy.

Mile 4: 5:54

Mile 5: 6:03

Mile 6: 5:42

Mile 7: 5:45

We were just cruising along together as a group trying to stay relaxed.  I got my first bottle here with a Cliff Shot and it was hit the spot.  I was heating up here so I ditched the bag, only to have it rain harder.

Mile 8: 6:53 Veyo (first half)

Mile 9: 6:41 Veyo (second half)

Mile 10: 6:35

We were catching up to Jon's group and we became a big pack around here for about a mile.  They were really crawling up the hill at dammeron valley. I sat on that pack for a while, and wasn't willing to push the pace yet.  Jon took off, and I knew I needed to go with him to hit my time goals, but didn't have enough gas.

Mile 11: 6:52 (not good)

Mile 12: 6:25 (better, but not looking good)

Mile 13: 6:00

During Mile 13, I left Ben and Steve O and ran with James, Walter, Greg, and some other guy for a while.  I ended up hitting the half at 1:22:00.  2:20 slower than last year.  Not good.  I have major work to do to PR.  2:35 is way out of reach.  New goal was to PR.  It would take a 4:30 negative split to do it.  Do-able but probably not today.  Gave it a shot though.

Mile 14: 6:12

Mile 15: 5:51

Mile 16: 5:43

Mile 17: 5:55

I was hoping for 5:30-5:40 through 15-17, grrrrr

Mile 18: 5:59

I was on my own as I was dropped by James, Walter, and Greg.  Cold, wet, and cramping in the hamstrings.

Mile 19: 6:38 (winchester hill)

Mile 20: 6:17 not sure what my problem was here.  Ummm, maybe I was tired or something.

Mile 21: 5:58

Mile 22: 6:25 (legs are shot, hammies are done)

Mile 23: 6:10

Mile 24: 6:05 (saw Bethany and the kids cheering me on in the rain.  They looked cold and wet too.)

Mile 25: 6:14 just surviving

Mile 26: 6:17 Am I done?

Mile 26.2 1:17 (5:41 pace) I am too cold and tired to care.....

Second Half = 1:20:03 (1:57 negative split).

Things that went well:

  • Fueling.  My bottles with Cliff shots very helpful
  • Even pacing
  • Good time considering the wind/rain (some say 20-30 mph headwind)
  • Didn't die

Things that went poorly

  • No PR
  • Couldn't find that gear to do a 1:16-1:17 second half
  • Couldn't stay with guys that I am capable of staying with.  Lacked the pain threshold/mental war/marathon pain/flght or flight response
  • Hamstring cramping issues

The PR will have to wait until next year.....

Sounds like you ran a heckuva race in some trying conditions. Maybe not a time PR but certainly one adjusted for the conditions you faced there. I'm not surprised you have some cramping issues....cold and wet don't make for happy muscles. A really good performance given all the external factors....wish I could pace myself thru a marathon like that under ideal conditions, much less what you managed. Great work!

From Superfly on Sat, Oct 04, 2008 at 19:13:52

Cody you ran very well under the circumstances. I guess we all just found out that every year can't be magical like last year.

From Lucia on Sat, Oct 04, 2008 at 19:19:57

Great job in those conditions Cody! Congratulations on not dying too :)

From Mark on Sat, Oct 04, 2008 at 19:50:01

Nice race for conditions...congrats!

Cody:

I wish we could have made it to cheer you on. I think you are awesome and I look up to you (in more ways than one). Not everyone can say that. (Referring to being vertically challenged.....me that is) hahaha

I am proud of you. Hope you guys have a good time at Grandma and Grandpa Martin's home in St. George. Hope Bethany does ok with the animals there.

Tell us when your next race is and we'll do our best to be there. Sorry about the weather issue. Usually you're whining about the heat there. hahaha

Love ya,

Mom

At least you can add this to the "I ran 2008, remember the awesome weather" stories in years to come. Still impressive.

From Predog on Sun, Oct 05, 2008 at 13:50:32

Nice job in spite of all that rain and wind! It seems everyone was a little slower because of it so you did good.

From Burt on Sun, Oct 05, 2008 at 18:08:20

I've enjoyed reading everyone's race reports. I liked your hint of sarcasm on your mile 20 report.

From Kim on Sun, Oct 05, 2008 at 20:06:16

It's always cool to be a part of the 'really bad weather' races! I think it is awesome that Bethany and the kids were out cheering for you! Tell them that they are pretty cool to be out there like that for you! I think you did a great job!

From Andy on Sun, Oct 05, 2008 at 21:38:16

You ran really well. You still have a lot of years of improvement ahead of you and it will be fun to watch you reach your potential.

From Chad on Sun, Oct 05, 2008 at 22:41:23

Quite a day, wasn't it, Cody? It took me back to some of the conditions we were running through in the Ogden Striders series ... You showed grit, nice job. Great season with all its ups and downs.

From Jon on Mon, Oct 06, 2008 at 00:20:48

I still say you ran a great race, all things considering. Especially since you got stuck by yourself for a while. Tough day, yet you still almost PR'ed. Care to join in a redemption race later this year?

From Jon on Mon, Oct 06, 2008 at 00:22:13

Yeah, Chad, at least we weren't running the marathon version of the Striders 10 mile course with that headwind... ugh.

From MarcieJ on Mon, Oct 06, 2008 at 00:27:02

Great job Cody! That was a tough one for sure. Its crazy that almost all of us felt about the same. I liked on your good things "didnt die" that is a good thing! Great job again!

From Bethany on Mon, Oct 06, 2008 at 10:44:17

YAY for Cody! I am proud of you PR or no PR. You are still my hero...(try not to gag, but I am serious)

From paul on Mon, Oct 06, 2008 at 10:48:19

Nice job Cody. Probably one of the better performances on the blog.

Jon - is Marci really going to let you run (and train for) a redemption race?? ;-)

From Dustin on Mon, Oct 06, 2008 at 11:00:10

Cody, nice race considering the weather. I had you guys in sight through Veyo Hill and was trying to catch up to you guys. I ran most of the race alone. The first 10 felt ok, then disaster the rest of the race. Looking for another marathon before the end of the year to end the year on a better note.

From josse on Mon, Oct 06, 2008 at 23:51:12

Great job Cody, this was a tough one. Your splits stayed consistant and look pretty strong at the end.

From wheakory on Tue, Oct 07, 2008 at 00:15:00

Great job Cody! You did what you could in the weather. Mother nature decided that this wasn't a day for PR's.

You did well, and least you didn't have as many issues like I had. Nice work. Always next year to PR.

From Brent on Tue, Oct 07, 2008 at 22:59:19

Cody, nice race, strong, PR effort is what counts, only thing you can control. Also, 500 commando points for the 8th place, always nice to take home some hardware.

Stay Kool, B of BS Rools out

From Adam RW on Sat, Oct 18, 2008 at 23:33:18

Over all nice race Cody. Now if we could find a day for good weather...
